Functional Literacy Programs
Society for Social Ventures in partnership with Impact for Peace, Hongkong organized
6.14.Child Education Sponsorship Program focused, mainly, on functional literacy to enable children read, write and do math for understanding & solving problems occurring in day to day activities with the aim of helping children understand the significance of literacy in overcoming their misery and bring about adjustability by interchange of cultures, traditions, values between Indian and foreigners with respect to each other and enhancing the scope of operation by mutual exchanges.
Year: 13th June to 3rd July 2013
Place: Slum located at CCS University road comprising of nomadic Gehare community producing grinding wares from stones and Rajput Lohar community producing kitchen utensil from iron
No of Children: 50 children(6-15yrs of age)
Resource Personnel: Sunita Goel Chief Functionary SSV (interpreter of language from English to Hindi) along with Volunteers from Slums Dharmveer and Narendra and 9 Students Trainers from Hongkong University studying Chinese Medicine, Law, Pharmacy Karen-lau, Queenie Ng,Peter Leung,Wicky Wong, Samuel Sy, Kitty Lam,Jane Hui, Elvis Chu, Kelly Lo

Activities Conducted for organizing this program:
- Sunita Goel (Chief Functionary SSV) with Narender ,Dharamveer from slum visited slum colonies lying across L Block Shastri Nagar ,Garh road opposite Bhagyashree hospital & university of Meerut city .Difficult to find Children interested in 20 days long literacy program as they are involved in rag picking, collecting wastes and begging as source of living .However 50 children, were identified from slum lying at university road consisting of Gehare community producing grinding material from stones, Rajput community producing cooking items from iron for livelihood
- A training cottage was constructed at a place s given by the leader of slum located at university road

- Welcome of 9 resource personnel from Hongkong University by slum community by interactions, singing dances & gymnasts
- Organising functional literacy Classes for children to enable them learn day to day used functional english vocabulary & numbers used by everyone everywhere like names & shifts of the days ,food, drinks, fruits, vegetables, flowers, birds, animals, parts of body, plants and tables etc through display of pictures, songs , actions, and games .They were taught reading and writing numbers, english alphabet and words . Reading and writing stationary materials, blocks and games were distributed to help children learn while playing

Literacy Program to illiterate women labourers by Society For Social Ventures
6.15. Society For Social Ventures organized “One Month Ved Vidya Saksharta Kendra” (Literacy Center ) for illiterate poor women laborers with the aim to enable them to acquire competency in three Reading ,Writing, Arithmetic-along with the ability to apply them to one’s day-day life like reading newspaper, hoarding ,children report card , manage daily accounts, sign cheque,leagal documents they have to sign

- Community Mobilisation Meetings for identification of Illiterate women ready to learn
Meeting 1: Organized by Sunita Goel in coordination with Sachin & Dhanno (Trainers ) On 30.10.2020 At House of Sachin , Village Nangla Shekhu, Block Rajpur , District Meerut Attended by Approx 15-16 women Outcome: Mostly women are literate
Meeting 2: Organized by Sunita Goel in coordination with Vimlesh (ASHA) & Arti On 13.11.2020 At House of Vimlesh, Village Murlipur Phool, Block Rajpur , District Meerut Attended by 20 women Outcome: Not Interested in Program
Meeting 3: Organized by Sonam Singh (Trainer Selected) On 29.11.20 At Ambedkar Panchayat Bhawan ,Kinnanagar, Block Rajpura,
District Meerut Attended by Approx 25-30 women Outcome: Women were found interested in attending literacy classes

- Conducting Ved Vidya Saksharta Kendra at house of Trainer Sonam Singh by furnishing with Literacy Chart, White Board, Markers ,Chalks and Distributing to learners books ,slates writing sticks, copies ,pen Pencils etc
- Reading and Writing examination had been conducted to check the ability of the students to understand & recognize, hindi, english alphabets, words, sentence, paragraphs, numbers, and simple calculations from arithmatics
- Outcome: Thirty one illiterate women laborers who could not get the opportunity to go to the school due to poverty or whatsoever reasons, are now able to read, write and do simple arithmetic required for day to day activities .They are able to sign the cheque book and understand the formal/legal papers before signing.
